original name Sakai Tadanao Japanese painter and poet of the late Tokugawa period (1603–1867).
大名家に生まれ、兄忠以の死後に出家し、書画、俳諧をたしなみ、その後琳派へ。
琳派の他にも様々な流派の画風を取り込み、晩年には王朝文化の流れを汲む大和絵へも深い関心を抱き、「江戸琳派」を確立し、優雅な花鳥風月の世界を作り上げる。

「Wind God and Thunder God/Le dieu du vent et le dieu du tonnerre 」
Both the Wind God and the Thunder God are originally subordinates to the Senju Kan'non (Kan'non-with-One-Thousand-Arms), and worshipped together with other twenty-eight Attendants. This is a copy of Sôtatsu's crowning work by Kôrin & Hoitsu .

Enduring Legacy of Japanese Art: The Mary Griggs Burke Collection

This exhibition introduces Mrs. Mary Burke, a resident of New York, who with her late husband Jackson Burke spent nearly half a century acquiring Japanese art and presents their amazing collection. We hope that our museum visitors will discover the beauty of Japanese art through the Burke Collection and through Mrs. Burke's aesthetic choices. The present exhibition comprises one-hundred sixteen masterpieces drawn from the collection of Mary Griggs Burke and the Burke Foundation. The objects range in terms of period from Jōmon through the Edo period, and in medium from sculpture to Buddhist art, paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, and lacquer ware, covering the entire gamut of Japanese art history.
